The debate on abortion has tended to avoid the psychological significance of an unwanted pregnancy, dominated instead by the strong emotions the subject excites. In this book Eva Pattis Zoja examines the thoughts and feelings that surround the decision to end a pregnancy, through the dreams, diary entries and reports of the women themselves. Abortionproposes the controversial thesis that although contraception is so readily available that the occurrence of unwanted pregnancy should become nil, abortion has now become a rite of passage in womanhood. While acknowledging the painful nature of the subject, the author suggests that this decision to abort as a way to development is one beyond the explanation of modern, enlightened rationalism.
The incredible medical breakthroughs of today, like genetic engineering, in-vitro fertilizations, and cloning, have transformed long-held beliefs on the nature of both life and death, raising difficult moral and religious questions. In Matters of Life and Death Elliot Dorff thoroughly addresses this unavoidable confluence of medical technology and Jewish law and ethics.
Plato’s Utopia Recast is an illuminating reappraisal of Plato’s later works, which reveals radical changes in his ethical and political theory. Christopher Bobonich examines later dialogues, with a special emphasis upon the Laws, and argues that in these late works, Plato both rethinks and revises the basic ethical and political positions that he held in his better-known earlier works, such as the Republic. This book will change our understanding of Plato. His controversial moral and political theory, so influential in Western thought, will henceforth be seen in a new light.
From Empedocles to Wittgenstein is a collection of fifteen historical essays in philosophy, written by Sir Anthony Kenny in the early years of the 21st century. In the main they are concerned with four of the great philosophers whom he most esteems, namely Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Wittgenstein. The author is not only one of the most respected historians of philosophy, and possibly the widest-ranging, but also one of the most successful at writing on the subject for a broad readership. In this volume he presents scholarly explorations of some themes which caught his interest as he worked on his acclaimed four-volume New History of Western Philosophy.
This second edition of Ethics in Practice is a comprehensive collection of more than 60 new, newly-revised, and classic essays on fourteen contemporary moral questions. Through the selection of essays, organization of sections, and incisive general and section introductions, this book integrates ethical theory and the discussion of practical moral problems. In addition to the more familiar issues, such as abortion, euthanasia, animal rights, preferential treatment, and the environment, the volume includes coverage of less familiar, but equally important issues such as immigration, political correctness, free speech, the use of drugs, world hunger, and economic justice. The second edition includes 21 essays not in the first edition, with expanded sections discussing three more topics: reproductive technologies, gun control, and capital punishment. This volume features accessible and engaging, yet philosophically rigorous essays that encourage the student to think critically about a wide range of practical moral issues. The supporting website at http://www.stpt.usf.edu/hhl/papers/ethics.in.practice.2nd.htm contains extensive links to sources on the topics, ethical theories, and guides on writing papers. These features make Ethics in Practice the ideal text for introductory and applied ethics courses.
