R. Jay Wallace argues in this book that moral accountability hinges on questions of fairness: When is it fair to hold people morally responsible for what they do? Would it be fair to do so even in a deterministic world? To answer these questions, we need to understand what we are doing when we hold people morally responsible, a stance that Wallace connects with a central class of moral sentiments, those of resentment, indignation, and guilt. To hold someone responsible, he argues, is to be subject to these reactive emotions in one’s dealings with that person. Developing this theme with unusual sophistication, he offers a new interpretation of the reactive emotions and traces their role in our practices of blame and moral sanction. With this account in place, Wallace advances a powerful and sustained argument against the common view that accountability requires freedom of will. Instead, he maintains, the fairness of holding people responsible depends on their rational competence: the power to grasp moral reasons and to control their behavior accordingly. He shows how these forms of rational competence are compatible with determinism. At the same time, giving serious consideration to incompatibilist concerns, Wallace develops a compelling diagnosis of the common assumption that freedom is necessary for responsibility. Rigorously argued, eminently readable, this book touches on issues of broad concern to philosophers, legal theorists, political scientists, and anyone with an interest in the nature and limits of responsibility.
From the relative obscurity in which Levinas’s work languished until very recently, Emmanuel Levinas must now be judged as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Continental philosophy. There is no better guide than John Lewelyn to lead one through the thickets of Levinas’s prose. Bursting with questions, multiple references, cascading citations and multilingual puns and nuances, this book is the compelling record of intellectual obsession. Taking as its guiding thre the theme of genealogy, the book gives a broadly chronological and impressively manageable presentation of the whole sweep of the Levinas’s work. Balanced and finely grained, Llewelyn confronts questions of method, Heidegger, phenomenology, the theme of sensibility, religion, enjoyment, feminity, eros, justice and the political. The book reaches a stunning climax in a series of chapters that give a hestitant but tolerant discussion of the question of God in Levinas, the relation to Levinasian ethics to Nietzscheangenealogy, and an extraordinary discussion of metaphor that leads into a wholly original analysis of Levinas’s poetics and metaphorics. The book concludes with a sensitive reading of the autobiographical epigraphs to Levinas’sOtherwise than Being…and a consideration of the Holocaust.
Nearly two centuries after declaring “the end of history,” Hegel remains a rich source of insights into our historical nature. The essays collected here interpret and develop those insights, while also challenging Hegel’s philosophical approach to comprehend present and future phenomena that he could neither experience nor imagine. They represent the very best in contemporary scholarship on Hegel and history, and collectively they address all of the important and disputed topics in the field: Hegel’s claim that history has an end, whether his philosophy of history is Eurocentric or racist, how elements of what he terms “subjective spirit” and “objective spirit” contribute to historical development, and the relationship between religion and his philosophy of history.
