Creative Moralityis a philosophical study of moral dilemmas which is designed to heighten our awareness of the ethical systems on which most of us base our moral decisions. Don MacNiven provides a theoretical basis for critical discussion of these systems and contributes to the development of a comprehensive ethical theory which is suitable for contemporary moral problems. Western moral thought has relied upon two basic ethical perspectives to resolve dilemmas utilitarianism and Kantianism. Don MacNiven argues that no real progress can be made with modern moral problems unless these traditions are coherently synthesized. He examines a diverse range of topics such as academic honesty, confidentiality of medical records, terrorism, experiments with human subjects, euthanasia, bribery and environmental issues. The book develops a new moral epistemology based on the hypothesis that moral thought is inherently creative rather than mechanical. The hypothetical dilemmas usedin the book are based on real life situations, so that theory can be tested against reality. The solutions offered from all perspectives are hypothetical rather than definitive, involving the restructuring of personal and social affairs in ways that adequately express their conflicting values. In order to solve moral dilemmas, MacNiven argues, we need both personal and social growth, which requires creativity in both thought and action. Creative Moralitymakes an important contribution to the development of a comprehensive ethical theory which can address complex moral problems. It integrates ethical theory and practice in unique ways that will appeal to the general educated reader as well as the professional ethicist.
A Practical Companion to Ethics, Third Edition, is a concise and accessible introduction to the basic attitudes and skills that make ethics work, like thinking for oneself, creative and integrative problem-solving, and keeping an open mind. This unique volume illuminates the broad kinds of practical intelligence required in moral judgment, complementing the narrower theoretical considerations that often dominate ethics courses. It offers practical instruction in problem-solving by demonstrating how to frame an ethical problem and deal effectively with ethical disagreements. The book also presents ethics as an ongoing learning experience, helping students to deal with both the complexities of their individual lives and with the larger issues that exist in the world around them. The third edition retains the most popular features of the previous edition, including challenging and relevant end-of-chapter exercises; brief text boxes that define key terms and review core strategies; and short dialogues that illustrate ethical dilemmas. The optimistic tone and brisk pace of the narrative provide an entertaining and intelligent guide to “everyday” morality. The third edition includes a more extensive treatment of ethics and religion (Chapter 2), which provides the framework for a moral dialogue that reaches across sectarian divides. It also contains a revised final chapter on the continuously unfolding nature of ethical understanding and an expanded appendix that gives detailed advice on writing various types of ethics papers. Ideal for introductory courses in ethics and applied ethics, A Practical Companion to Ethics, Third Edition, can also be used in any course related to critical thinking.
Book Summary of Confronting Aristotle’s Ethics: Ancient And Modern MoralityWhat is the good life? Posing this question today would likely elicit very different answers. Some might say that the good life means doing good?improving one?s community and the lives of others. Others might respond that it means doing well?cultivating one?s own abilities in a meaningful way. But for Aristotle these two distinct ideas?doing good and doing well?were one and the same and could be realized in a single life. In Confronting Aristotle?s Ethics, Eugene Garver examines how we can draw this conclusion from Aristotle’s works, while also studying how this conception of the good life relates to contemporary ideas ofmorality. The key to Aristotle?s views on ethics, argues Garver, lies in the Metaphysics or, more specifically, in his thoughts on activities, actions, and capacities. For Aristotle, Garver shows, it is only possible to be truly active when acting for the common good, and it is only possible to be truly happy when active to the extent of one?s own powers. But does this mean we should aspire to Aristotle?s impossibly demanding vision of the good life? In a word, no. Garver stresses the enormous gap between life in Aristotle?s time and ours. As a result, this book will be a welcome rumination on not only Aristotle, but the relationship between the individual and society in everyday life..
