This book examines the depiction of the social construction of male homosexuality, lesbianism, and women’s role in “The Bell”, “A Fairly Honourable Defeat”, “An Accidental Man”, “The Philosopher’s Pupil”, and “The Green Knight”. It also explores the representation of power dynamics in the portrayal of homosexuality in Murdoch’s fiction and takes a detailed look at the illustration of power-knowledge vis-a-vis incest in “A Severed Head and The Time of the Angels”. Murdoch’s representation of Platonic “bisexuality” in “Henry and Cato” and “The Book and the Brotherhood” is examined in depth, and is followed by an analysis of the representation of transvestism in “The Philosopher’s Pupil”, “The Green Knight”, and “The Black Prince”. The study finds that it is generally difficult to classify the genders and sexualities to Murdoch’s characters, and that Murdoch’s narrative style also evades classification under traditional rubrics of gender or artistic achievement. Josiah Royce (1855-1916), one of the outstanding classical American philosophers, is regarded by many as the foremost American idealist. A transitional book in the development of Royce’s thought, The Philosophy of Loyalty is a key to understanding his influence on the development of pragmatism. Royce’s basic argument is clear. Individual wills are a given, and social training is a natural aspect of community. But the two are not fully compatible, and conflicts naturally emerge. Loyalty to a cause unites many individuals into a community, but fanatical loyalty to causes often has inimical results. Long out of print and never before available in paperback, The Philosophy of Loyalty has many beneficial implications for understanding contemporary social passions and outlooks, especially for our own fragmented American culture. As Royce himself asserted nearly ninety years ago, in the preface of this book, “I am writing…not merely and not mainly for philosophers, but for all those who love…ideals, and also for those who love…their country – a country so ripe at present for idealism, and so confused, nevertheless, by the vastness and the complication of its social and political problems.” Royce speaks to these continuing concerns in a voice that is perceptive, learned, and sensitive to the human situation, and he offers powerful conceptual tools for our own troubled times.
This book argues that moral theology has yet to embrace the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council concerning the ways in which moral theology is to be renewed. There is little or no consensus between theologians regarding the nature, content and uniqueness of Christian morality. After highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the so-called autonomy and faith ethic schools of thought, Mealey argues that there is little dividing them and that, in some instances, both schools are simply defending one aspect of a hermeneutical dialectic. In an attempt to move away from the divisions between proponents of the faith-ethic and autonomy positions, Mealey enlists the help of the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur, arguing that the debate on the uniqueness of Christian morality can be mediated if scholars look to the possibilities opened up by Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of interpretation. Mealey also argues that the uniqueness of Christian morality is more adequately explained in terms of a specific identity (self) that is constantly subject to change and revision in light of many, often conflicting, moral sources. She advocates a move away from attempts to explain the uniqueness of Christian morality in terms of one specific, unchanging context, motivation, norm or divine command or value. By embracing the possibilities opened up by Ricoeurian hermeneutics, Mealey explains how concepts such as revelation, tradition, orthodoxy and moral conscience may be understood in a hermeneutical way without being deemed sectarian or unorthodox.
