One of the most influential debates in John Locke`s work is the problem of personal identity over time. This problem is that of how a person at one time is the same person later in time, and so can be held responsible for past actions. The time of most concern for Locke is that of the general resurrection promised in the New Testament. Given the turbulence of the Reformation and the formation of new approaches to the Bible, many philosophers and scientists paid careful attention to emerging orthodoxies or heterodoxies about death. Here K. Joanna S. Forstrom examines the interrelated positions of Rene Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, Henry More and Robert Boyle in their individual contexts and in Locke`s treatment of them. She argues that, in this way, we can better understand Locke and his position on personal identity and immortality. Once his unique take is understood and grounded in his own theological convictions (or lack thereof), we can better evaluate Locke and defend him against classic objections to his thought.
The term bioethics was first used in the early 1970s by biologists who were concerned about ethical implications of genetic and ecological interventions, but was soon applied to all aspects of biomedical ethics, including health care delivery, research, and public policy. Its literature draws from disciplines as varied as clinical medicine and nursing, scientific research, theology and philosophy, law, and the social sciences?each with its own distinctive vocabulary and expressions. A Handbook of Bioethics Terms is a handy and concise glossary-style reference featuring over 400 entries on the significant terms, expressions, titles, and court cases that are most important to the field. Most entries are cross-referenced, making this handbook a valuable addition to the bookshelves of undergraduate and graduate students in health care ethics, physicians and nurses, members of institutional ethics committees, and others interested in bioethics.
The Moral Interpretation of Religion provides a critical examination of the traditional attempt to interpret religion in moral terms alone. Respected philosopher Peter Byrne discusses the general character of moral interpretation, probes the relation of religion to morality, and assesses historical attempts to reason directly from the basis of morality to the existence of a personal God. As the first full-length treatment of this theme, this volume offers students and inquiring general readers a valuable discussion of one of the most powerful and enduring apologetics for explicating religious belief.
Business takes place in an increasingly global environment, crossing political and cultural boundaries, and consequently ethical dilemmas arise. The central focus of this successful and innovative text lies in how to make and explain ‘best choice’ judgments in international business situations. The newly-updated version of this groundbreaking textbook continues to provide a topical and relevant analysis of the ethical dimensions of conducting business in a global political economy. From a starting point of applied ethics, the book introduces a common set of normative terms and analytical tools for examining and discussing real case scenarios. Extensive real-world examples, presented in the form of exhibits, cover issues including:foreign production, including sweatshopsexport of hazardous productstesting and pricing of HIV-AIDS drugsadvertising tobacco, alcoholic beverages and infant formuladeceptive marketing techniques and briberyreligious and social discriminationcultural impacts from ‘music, movies and malls’environmental issues, including oil spills, rain forest preservation, global warming and genetically modified foods. To keep pace with the changing landscape of global business, this new edition features:Updated exhibits that introduce new issues and are sourced from more international publicationsIncreased coverage of issues arising in emerging marketsUpdated descriptions and assessments of relevant international agreementsNew glossary of terms and abbreviationsCompanion website featuring links to relevant global policy documents from the UN, WHO, and UNCTAD, as well as updated discussion-oriented information on issues and cases. The continued globalization of business increases the relevance of this textbook and its unique focus on specifically international ethical challenges faced by business, where governments and civil society groups play an active role. While most business ethics texts continue to focus heavily on ethical theory, this textbook condenses ethical theory into applied decision-making concepts, emphasizing practical applications to real world dilemmas.Anyone with an interest in the ethical implications of international business, or the business implications of corporate responsibility in the global market, will find this book a thought-provoking yet balanced analysis. Clearly written, this has become the textbook of choice in this increasingly important field.
The debate over religious lawmaking pits respect for religious pluralism against moral identity-with liberal theorists contending that religious lawmaking is generally suspect in a morally and religiously diverse polity like the United States, and communitarian ones arguing that lawmakers cannot, and should not, be expected to suppress their religious commitments in their public policy making. Looking carefully at both sides of this ongoing debate, Lucinda Peach explores the limitations as well as the value of these conflicting perspectives, and proposes a solution for their reconciliation. Peach breaks from traditional analysis as she contends that both sides of the argument are fundamentally flawed. Neither side has been willing to recognize the merit of the other’s arguments, and both have ignored the gender-based disparities of religious lawmaking (particularly with respect to the effect religion has had on reproductive rights and abortion regulation). Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book argues for a pragmatic solution to this impasse which will respect religious pluralism, moral identity, and gender differences. Peach’s proposals will be of interest to philosophers, legal theorists, and scholars in women’s studies and political science.
