The Nature of Normativity presents a complete theory about the nature of normative thought –that is, the sort of thought that is concerned with what ought to be the case, or what we ought to do or think. Ralph Wedgwood defends a kind of realism about the normative, according to which normative truths or facts are genuinely part of reality. Anti-realists often complain that realism gives rise to demands for explanation that it cannot adequately meet. What is the nature of these normative facts? How could we ever know them or even refer to them in language or thought? Wedgwood accepts that any adequate version of realism must answer these explanatory demands. However, he seeks to show that these demands can be met — in large part by relying on a version of the idea, which has been much discussed in recent work in the philosophy of mind, that the intentional is normative — that is, that there is no way of explaining the nature of the various sorts of mental states that have intentional or representational content (such as beliefs, judgments, desires, decisions, and so on), without stating normative facts. On the basis of this idea, Wedgwood provides a detailed systematic theory that deals with the following three areas: the meaning of statements about what ought to be; the nature of the facts stated by these statements; and what justifies us in holding beliefs about what ought to be.
Richard Sorabji presents a brilliant exploration of the history of ourunderstanding of the self, which has remained elusive and mysterious throughoutthe spectacular development of human knowledge of the outside world. He rangesfrom ancient to contemporary thought, Western and Eastern, to reveal and assessthe insights of a remarkable variety of thinkers. He discusses a set of topicswhich are at the heart of our understanding of ourselves: personal identity;memory; the importance of seeing one’s life as a whole; the relation betweenself, intellect, will, and agency; self-awareness; the stream of consciousness;embodiment; death and survival. He rejects the view, found in variousphilosophical and religious writings, that the self is an illusion, and developshis own original conception of the self as essential to our ownership of ourexperience and our apprehension of the world.
The incredible medical breakthroughs of today, like genetic engineering, in-vitro fertilizations, and cloning, have transformed long-held beliefs on the nature of both life and death, raising difficult moral and religious questions. In Matters of Life and Death Elliot Dorff thoroughly addresses this unavoidable confluence of medical technology and Jewish law and ethics.
Renowned scholar Robert Adams explores the relation between religion and ethics through a comprehensive philosophical account of a theistically-based framework for ethics. Adams’ framework begins with the good rather than the right, and with excellence rather than usefulness. He argues that loving the excellent, of which adoring God is a clear example, is the most fundamental aspect of a life well lived. Developing his original and detailed theory, Adams contends that devotion, the sacred, grace, martyrdom, worship, vocation, faith, and other concepts drawn from religious ethics have been sorely overlooked in moral philosophy and can enrich the texture of ethical thought.
