Jacques Cory’s second book Activist Business Ethics expands upon the theoretical concepts developed in his first book Business Ethics: The Ethical Revolution of Minority Shareholders published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in March 2001. Activist business ethics is needed in order to remedy the wrongdoing committed to stakeholders and minority shareholders. This will be achieved by cooperation between ethical businessmen, activist academics, stakeholders and minority shareholders. We should treat others as we would want others to treat us, not through interest, but by conviction. Yet this principle is not the guideline of many companies in the modern business world, despite the fact that most religions and philosophers have advocated it in the last 3,000 years. How can we convince or compel modern business to apply this principle? And is it essential to the success of economy? In order to answer these questions this book examines the evolution of activist business ethics in business, in democracies, in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, in philosophy and psychology. The book examines international aspects, the personification of stakeholders, the predominance of values and ethics for CEOs and the inefficient safeguards of the stakeholders’ interests. The book presents new vehicles for the safeguard of those interests, such as the Internet, Transparency, Ethical Funds and Activist Associations, and future activist vehicles, such as the Supervision Board and the Institute of Ethics. Today everybody is a stakeholder and a minority shareholder of a company, directly or through our pension funds, or as a client, a supplier, a member of a community and a citizen. The principal premise of the book is, therefore, that ultimately the wrongdoers act against themselves. The book is woven with many references on ethics and business ethics from the professional and classic world literature, the Bible and other religious texts, poetry, maxims, and folk tales; showing that ethical problems are similar throughout the ages and cultures, but some of the solutions given in this book are new and original. Activist Business Ethics is primarily intended for the academic market and is particularly appropriate for academics in business administration, ethics and finance. It should also appeal strongly to the professional business/finance market, and to stakeholders and minority shareholders as well, who are aware of the wrongdoing committed to them and who want to remedy the situation by activist conduct.
A volume of studies of utilitarianism considered both as a theory of personal morality and a theory of public choice. All but two of the papers have been commissioned especially for the volume, and between them they represent not only a wide range of arguments for and against utilitarianism but also a first-class selection of the most interesting and influential work in this very active area. There is also a substantial introduction by the two editors. The volume will constitute an important stimulus and point of reference for a wide range of philosophers, economists and social theorists.
The Violence of Love is a powerful collection of extracts from Romero’s homilies, letters, and articles. Each of these passages gives insight into the mind and heart of the man behind them, more insight, perhaps, than any biographic account of his life. They show a man not afraid to expose his weakness, a man whose tremendous faith and hope call us to repentance and renewal.Originally addressed to the people of El Salvador, Romero’s words speak to all people, passionately decrying injustice and violence, exhorting to peace and forgiveness, and inviting all to help build a new, just society. Chronologically arranged, the selections reflect Romero’s own spiritual transformation and call us to experience a similar revolution of the heart.Romero was martyred for his insistence that following Christ cannot be relegated to the spiritual realm. He did not die in vain; the people of Central America say his spirit lives on in them. As their struggle for justice and dignity intensifies, his words take on a renewed urgency.Short, poetic passages make this collection excellent reading for daily reflection and renewal.
From the relative obscurity in which Levinas’s work languished until very recently, Emmanuel Levinas must now be judged as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Continental philosophy. There is no better guide than John Lewelyn to lead one through the thickets of Levinas’s prose. Bursting with questions, multiple references, cascading citations and multilingual puns and nuances, this book is the compelling record of intellectual obsession. Taking as its guiding thre the theme of genealogy, the book gives a broadly chronological and impressively manageable presentation of the whole sweep of the Levinas’s work. Balanced and finely grained, Llewelyn confronts questions of method, Heidegger, phenomenology, the theme of sensibility, religion, enjoyment, feminity, eros, justice and the political. The book reaches a stunning climax in a series of chapters that give a hestitant but tolerant discussion of the question of God in Levinas, the relation to Levinasian ethics to Nietzscheangenealogy, and an extraordinary discussion of metaphor that leads into a wholly original analysis of Levinas’s poetics and metaphorics. The book concludes with a sensitive reading of the autobiographical epigraphs to Levinas’sOtherwise than Being…and a consideration of the Holocaust.
