Paternalistic intervention, especially in the context of modern medicine and health care, is the topical issue of The Limits of Medical Paternalism. Dr Hayry aims to define and morally assess paternalistic interventions through a defined conceptual background. The method employed for this purpose is that of applied philosophical ethics in the analytic tradition. It is argued that there is a marked distinction between strong and weak paternalism. Strong paternalism is defined as the violation of autonomy of a patient ‘in her own best interest’ when the person is capable of autonomous decision-making in matters that concern primarily only herself. Weak paternalism is the violation of autonomy when a person is temporarily incapable of self-determined decision-making; it is therefore sometimes justifiable. The application of these views is that no overall a priori judgement concerning the rights and wrongs of such medical intervention is possible.
We remember the admonition of our mothers: “Treat others as you want them to treat you.” But what if being nice was something we were inclined by nature to do anyway? Renowned neuroscientist Donald Pfaff upends our entire understanding of ethics and social contracts with an intriguing proposition: the Golden Rule is hardwired into the human brain.Pfaff, the researcher who first discovered the connections between specific brain circuits and certain behaviors, contends that the basic ethics governing our everyday lives can be traced directly to brain circuitry. Writing with popular science journalist Sandra J. Ackerman, he explains in this clear and concise account how specific brain signals induce us to consider our actions as if they were directed at ourselves—and subsequently lead us to treat others as we wish to be treated. Brain hormones are a part of this complicated process, and The Neuroscience of Fair Play discusses how brain hormones can catalyze behaviors with moral implications in such areas as self-sacrifice, parental love, friendship, and violent aggression. Drawing on his own research and other recent studies in brain science, Pfaff offers a thought-provoking hypothesis for why certain ethical codes and ideas have remained constant across human societies and cultures throughout the world and over the centuries of history. An unprecedented and provocative investigation, The Neuroscience of Fair Play offers a new perspective on the increasingly important intersection of neuroscience and ethics.

Nearly two centuries after declaring “the end of history,” Hegel remains a rich source of insights into our historical nature. The essays collected here interpret and develop those insights, while also challenging Hegel’s philosophical approach to comprehend present and future phenomena that he could neither experience nor imagine. They represent the very best in contemporary scholarship on Hegel and history, and collectively they address all of the important and disputed topics in the field: Hegel’s claim that history has an end, whether his philosophy of history is Eurocentric or racist, how elements of what he terms “subjective spirit” and “objective spirit” contribute to historical development, and the relationship between religion and his philosophy of history.
