Does Farmer Field really know his prize cow, Daisy, is in the field? When is an unexpected exam not wholly unexpected? Are all bachelors (really) unmarried? Martin Cohen’s bestselling 101 Philosophy Problems is a witty and engaging introduction to philosophy, covering classical as well as contemporary problems from the fields of medical ethics, modern physics and artificial intelligence. For the third edition, many of the problems have been revised and there are several brand new ones, including Lewis Carroll’s problem of people who don’t eat lentils and Poincare’s problem of the gaseous people whose measurements keep changing. With an updated glossary of helpful terms and possible solutions to the problems at the end of the book, 101 Philosophy Problems is essential reading for anyone coming to philosophy for the first time.
Smart Thinking: Skills for Critical Understanding and Writing 2E is a practical step-by-step guide to improving skills in analysis, critical thinking, and the effective communication of arguments and explanations. The book combines an accessible and straightforward style, with a strong foundation of knowledge. The text treats reasoning as an aspect of communication, not an abstract exercise in logic. The book not only provides detailed advice on how to practise analytical skills, but also demonstrates how these skills can be used in research and writing. In particular, it emphasises how to develop arguments that are coherent and that take account of their audience and context.
This monograph is based on qualitative and inductive research. All the cases treated in it are based on current events and try to find the common aspects and basic rules that govern the wrongdoing to the minority shareholders. In the four cases of US, French and Israeli companies, most of them in high tech, the minority shareholders lose almost all their investment. Those are not pervert cases but the norm in many companies, which is illustrated by qualitative cases, without being able of course to quantify them. Case studies are the preferred strategy when “how” and “why” questions are being posed. The purpose of this monograph is therefore to analyze why and how companies do not act ethically towards their minority shareholders, not how many, not which, not to what degree and not where.
