Jeremy Carrette argues that the psychology of religion is no longer sustainable without a social critique, and that as William James predicted, the project of the modernist psychology of religion has failed. Controversially he champions greater social and philosophical analysis within the field to challenge the political naivety and disciplinary illusions of the traditional approaches to psychology of religion. Carrette discusses the relevance of the social and economic factors surrounding the debates of psychology and religion, through three critical examples: psychoanalysis humanistic psychology cognitive neuroscience. A Critical Psychology of Religion provides a new dimension to the debates surrounding religious experience. It will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of critical psychology, religious experience and the psychology of religion and extends aninterdisciplinary challenge to the separation of psychology, sociology, politics, economics and religion.
Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2000.A Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 1999Academic debates about pluralism and truth have become increasingly polarized in recent years. One side embraces extreme relativism, deeming any talk of objective truth as philosophically naive. The opposition, frequently arguing that any sort of relativism leads to nihilism, insists on an objective notion of truth according to which there is only one true story of the world. Both sides agree that there is no middle path.In Truth in Context, Michael Lynch argues that there is a middle path, one where metaphysical pluralism is consistent with a robust realism about truth. Drawing on the work of Hilary Putnam, W. V. O. Quine, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, among others, Lynch develops an original version of metaphysical pluralism, which he calls relativistic Kantianism. He argues that one can take facts and propositions as relative without implying that our ordinary concept of truth is a relative, epistemic, or “soft” concept. The truths may be relative, but our concept of truth need not be.

This book challenges the prevailing view of cinema and cinema culture that Hollywood/the US creates, produces and exports, with other countries importing, sometimes modifying and sometimes pirating ‘original’ American work. Instead the book argues that the ‘original ideas’ which underpin the moneymaking activities of the ‘creative industries’, and for which ‘ownership’ is secured through copyright, are often imported, ‘borrowed’ and modified by Hollywood itself from other cultures and national cinemas. The book considers especially Chinese and Korean cinema, and film ‘piracy’ in these countries, to show that ideas of cultural ownership and copyright are not as straightforward as they may at first seem, and that copyright is perhaps primarily a lever through which cultural control is exercised by the cultural big business of the dominant power.
