There has been a consistent interest in ethical issues arising in the context of HIV research. Ongoing international and multi-site studies and the continuing search for an HIV vaccine continue to prompt examination of how this research is conducted, how participants are engaged in the studies, and the obligations of the researchers to individual participants and their communities during the course of and following the conclusion of the research. Each chapter is authored primarily by one of the editors (secondarily by the other) and is accompanied by one to two case studies. Each case study has been authored by an HIV/AIDS researcher with experience in the subject matter of the chapter. The case studies will focus on an actual ethical dilemma encountered by the researcher, with suggestions on how it can be resolved. Each chapter addresses relevant issues and emphasizes particular ethical principles.
This second edition of Ethics in Practice is a comprehensive collection of more than 60 new, newly-revised, and classic essays on fourteen contemporary moral questions. Through the selection of essays, organization of sections, and incisive general and section introductions, this book integrates ethical theory and the discussion of practical moral problems. In addition to the more familiar issues, such as abortion, euthanasia, animal rights, preferential treatment, and the environment, the volume includes coverage of less familiar, but equally important issues such as immigration, political correctness, free speech, the use of drugs, world hunger, and economic justice. The second edition includes 21 essays not in the first edition, with expanded sections discussing three more topics: reproductive technologies, gun control, and capital punishment. This volume features accessible and engaging, yet philosophically rigorous essays that encourage the student to think critically about a wide range of practical moral issues. The supporting website at http://www.stpt.usf.edu/hhl/papers/ethics.in.practice.2nd.htm contains extensive links to sources on the topics, ethical theories, and guides on writing papers. These features make Ethics in Practice the ideal text for introductory and applied ethics courses.
A Modern Legal Ethicsproposes a wholesale renovation of legal ethics, one that contributes to ethical thought generally.Daniel Markovits reinterprets the positive law governing lawyers to identify fidelity as its organizing ideal. Unlike ordinary loyalty, fidelity requires lawyers to repress their personal judgments concerning the truth and justice of their clients’ claims. Next, the book asks what it is like–not psychologically but ethically–to practice law subject to the self-effacement that fidelity demands. Fidelity requires lawyers to lie and to cheat on behalf of their clients. However, an ethically profound interest in integrity gives lawyers reason to resist this characterization of their conduct. Any legal ethics adequate to the complexity of lawyers’ lived experience must address the moral dilemmas immanent in this tension. The dominant approaches to legal ethics cannot. Finally,A Modern Legal Ethicsreintegrates legal ethics into political philosophy in a fashion commensurate to lawyers’ central place in political practice. Lawyerly fidelity supports the authority of adjudication and thus the broader project of political legitimacy.Throughout, the book rejects the casuistry that dominates contemporary applied ethics in favor of an interpretive method that may be mimicked in other areas. Moreover, because lawyers practice at the hinge of modern morals and politics, the book’s interpretive insights identify–in an unusually pure and intense form–the moral and political conditions of all modernity.
Nietzsche was surprisingly neglected by most English-language moral philosophers until recently. This volume capitalizes on a growth of interest in Nietzsche’s work on morality from two sides — from scholars of the history of philosophy and from contributors to current debates on ethical theory. In eleven new essays, leading philosophers aim both to advance philosophical understanding of Nietzsche’s ethical views — his normative and meta-ethics, his moral psychology, his views on free will and the nature of the self — and to make Nietzsche a live participant in contemporary debates in ethics and cognate fields.
