“Kellenberger’s book is thoughtful, evocative, well researched, and informative. He has managed to pull together a notable range of examples to illustrate his thesis that a proper understanding of person-person relationships can untangle differences between relativists and antirelativists…. Examples include abortion, marital Fidelity, the distribution of justice, famine relief, genital mutilation–all sensitive to such non-Western cultures as tribal Africa, Buddhism, and Hinduism….This book should find its place in many courses in ethics, philosophy of social science, cultural theory, and other courses concerned with multicultural themes.”
Excerpts from Robert Nozick’s “Invariances” Necessary truths are invariant across all possible worlds, contingent ones across only some. No wonder necessity lures philosophers. It is the flame, the philosopher the moth. Our intuitions that certain statements are necessary do not powerfully support this claim when natural selection would produce strong intuitions of their self-evidence, even were these statements (only) contingently true. Contemporary philosophers who give great weight to intuitions need to offer some account of why such intuitions are reliable and are to be trusted. Of course, if the purpose of such philosophy is merely to codify and systematize the intuitions that (for whatever reason) are held, then a philosophy built upon intuitions will need no further basis. And it will have no further validity. You might think that an insight into metaphysical impossibility could save the physicists much useless work by thereby excluding something as physically possible. Things seem to have worked in the opposite direction, though. Driven by a need to explain strange data, physicists formulate theories that countenance what previously was held to be metaphysically impossible. . . The physical tail wags the metaphysical dog. Why is there an objective world? Within evolutionary cosmology scientific laws might be viewed as the heritable structure of a universe, akin to what in biology would be an organism’s genetic endowment. . . Suppose that the reproductive process of a universe produces transformed offspring universes that differ from their parent. The greater the transformations that a law is invariant under, and the wider their number, the greater is that law’s heritability. The vast majority of the universes that exist through the processes of evolutionary cosmology, therefore, will exhibit laws that are invariant under a wide range of significant transformations. Such invariance, we have seen, is exactly what constitutes objectiveness. Evolutionary cosmology gives us objective worlds.
This book analyzes the moral confusion of contemporary society, relating rival conceptions of morality with a wide variety of views about the nature and predicament of man. Mitchell argues that many secular thinkers possess a traditional “Christian” conscience which they find hard to defend in terms of an entirely secular world-view, but which is more in line with a Christian understanding of man.
Invaluable book for practitioners and students alike. Readable and authoritative, subjects range from confidentiality, consent, mental disabilities and negligence, and the practical aspects of managing complaints and claims. Where differences occur, as in Scotland, these are fully explained. Developments in revalidation and continuing professional education make this a timely publication which should be readily available to every dentist and dental student. It provides clear and comprehensive guidance on key legal and ethical issues, and emphasises the standards which are now expected by patients and the profession.
This work offers a new understanding of Kant on the freedom of the will. Voeller looks in detail at theGroundwork of the Metaphysics of Moralsand theCritique of Practical Reasonagainst the background of Kant’s critical philosophy as a whole. Voeller’s book is essential reading for those interested in moral philosophy, Kant, philosophy of religion, philosophy of action and freedom of the will.
