Kok-Chor Tan argues that the cosmopolitan idea of global justice may be understood in such a way that it can accept nationalist and patriotic commitments. Tan believes that cosmopolitan justice need not deny the worth of the ordinary non-impartial values even as it defends a vision of global egalitarianism. Properly understood, it can set the limits for nationalist and patriotic efforts without denying the moral independence of these partial pursuits.
Taking a refreshingly hands-on approach to introductory ethics, A 21st Century Ethical Toolbox provides students with a set of tools to help them understand and make a constructive difference in real-life moral controversies. Thoroughly optimistic, it invites students to approach ethical issues with a reconstructive intent, making room for more and better options than the traditional “pro” and “con” positions that have grown up around tough problems like abortion and animal rights. Ideal for introductory and applied ethics courses, this unique text does not treat ethics as a purely academic, historical, or theoretical subject, but as a wide-ranging and ongoing set of challenges that calls for multiple and interwoven kinds of intelligence. It covers the skills that are most vital to making real progress in ethics, including paying careful attention to the values at stake on all sides of an issue; looking for creative opportunities within difficult problems; critical-thinking skills such as defining key terms and making sure to judge similar cases alike; and learning how to engage in constructive dialogue. Instructors can readily use the experiential and applied activities inspired by this “toolbox” of practical skills to design an interactive and collaborative ethics course. Students can carry these essential skills directly from this book into such projects as campaigning for environmental awareness and staffing local homeless shelters. In addition to his own discussion, Weston includes gripping and provocative short selections from essayists, activists, and philosophers, and also cites his own students. Extensive “Exercises and Notes” sections end each chapter, and a detailed appendix offers instructors advice on how to use the Toolbox in the classroom.
Russell Hardin presents a new explication of David Hume’s moral and political theory. With Hume, he holds that our normative views can be scientifically explained but they cannot be justified as true. Hume argued for the psychological basis of such views. In particular, he argued for sympathy as the mirroring of the psychological sensations and emotions of others. By placing Hume in the developing tradition of social science, as a strong forerunner of his younger friend Adam Smith, Hardin demonstrates Hume’s strong strategic sense, his nascent utilitarianism, his powerful theory of convention as a main source of social and political order, and his recognition of moral and political theory as a single enterprise.”Worthy of hearty recommendation.”–Lee Hardy, The Review of MetaphysicsRussell Hardin is Professor of Politics at New York University.Preface1. ‘…well written, clear and informative. It contains many references that demonstrate the deep knowledge of the field that the author has acquired through her own research and her remarkable work at the head of the Journal of Cultural Economics. She especially provides a very clear review of the literature on the economics of copyright…. this review will become a reference that can’t be ignored by researchers interested in copyright…Towse opens avenues for further research and also stresses those questions that can help professionals better understand cultural regulations.’ – Françoise Benhamou, Journal of Cultural Economics ‘Ruth Towse’s book provides an easily accessible introduction to this field and contains much useful argument. It also stands as testament to the productive and continuing scholarly career of one of the best known figures in contemporary cultural economics.’ – David Throsby, Journal of Economic Literature ‘This is a most interesting treatise on a very topical subject of economic and legal policy …this book offers a wealth of intriguing research ideas and some interesting, if not highly rigorous, analyses of an important area of public policy.’ – Mary Kokoski, Monthly Labor Review ‘Ruth Towse’s excellent book, Creativity, Incentive and Reward is a beacon in this confused theoretical and policy mish-mash. The book, which brings together Towse’s work in copyright and cultural economics over the last decade, is thoroughly researched, analytically satisfying and beautifully written…copyright scholars owe a debt of gratitude to Towse.’ – Fiona Macmillan, Copyright World ‘This is an important work on compensation of the artist and the incentives for artistic activity. The explosive evolution of the technology of communications raises particularly pressing issues in this arena and poses new threats to remuneration of the artist. The discussion of copyright in this book provides vital information for analysis of this issue. The book is informative, intelligent and well written – precisely what is needed for understanding of its subject.’ – William J. Baumol, New York University and Princeton University, US Creativity is crucial to the Information Age economy. It is the basis of production in the cultural industries. In this excellent book, Ruth Towse provides an analysis of the interaction between creativity, the law, and markets for cultural goods and services. Copyright law establishes property rights that create economic incentives to cultural production and Ruth Towse uses her analysis to draw conclusions about policy on copyright. This unique study is of interest to a range of disciplines in economics, law, cultural studies and management.
