For much of the twentieth century, philosophy and science went their separate ways. In moral philosophy, fear of the so-called naturalistic fallacy kept moral philosophers from incorporating developments in biology and psychology. Since the 1990s, however, many philosophers have drawn on recent advances in cognitive psychology, brain science, and evolutionary psychology to inform their work. This collaborative trend is especially strong in moral philosophy, and these three volumes bring together some of the most innovative work by both philosophers and psychologists in this emerging interdisciplinary field.Contributors to Volume 3:Abigail Baird (Vassar College), William Casebeer (Air Force Academy), Cordelia Fine (Monash University), Nathan Fox (University of Maryland), Uta Frith (University College London, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience), Jordan Grafman (National Institute of Health), Joshua Greene (Harvard University), Catherine Hynes (School of Psychology, University of Queensland), Fatima Azavedo Ignacio (Cognitive Psychology, Instituto Philippe Pinel), Richard Joyce (Australian National University Research School of Social Science), Jerome Kagan (Harvard University) Leonard Katz (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Kent Kiehl (Yale University), Jeanette Kennett (Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Australian National University), Melanie Killen (University of Maryland), Daniel Lapsley (Ball State University), Heidi Maibom (Carleton University), Victoria McGeer (Princeton University), John Mikhail (Georgetown Law School), Jorge Moll (National Institute of Health), Shaun Nichols (University of Arizona), Ricardo de Oliveira-Souza (Universidade do Rio de Janeiro), Adina Roskies (Dartmouth College), Mirella L. How can we enhance police integrity? The authors surveyed over 3000 police officers from 30 U.S. police departments on how they would respond to typical scenarios where integrity is challenged. They studied three police agencies which scored highly on the integrity scale: Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; and St. Petersburg, Florida. The authors conclude that enhancing police integrity goes well beyond culling out “bad apple” police officers. Police administrators should focus on four aspects: organizational rulemaking; detecting, investigating and disciplining rule violations; circumscribing the informal “code of silence” that prohibits police from reporting the misconduct of their colleagues; and understanding the influence of public expectations and agency history.
“This book examines the role of philosophy and philosophers in bioethics. Academics often see bioethical studies as too practical while decision makers tend to see them as too theoretical. The purpose of this collection of new essays by an international group of distinguished scholars is to explore the troubled relationship between theory and practice in the ethical assessment of medicine, health care, and new medical and genetic technologies. The book is divided into six parts. In the first part, philosophers consider the definition of bioethics, the nature of applied ethics more generally, and the possibility of combining utilitarian and liberal strands of thinking in moral and political studies. In the second part, authors discuss the place and justification of principles in bioethics and the significance of medical and nursing experience in moral decision making. The third part addresses the complementary (or contradictory, as the case may be) principles of dignity, autonomy, precaution, and solidarity, and their use in theoretical and practical settings. In the fourth part, public health measures and experimental research are defended against traditional moral concerns. Part five scrutinizes parental responsibilities in bearing and rearing children, especially the reasons for and against human reproduction in individual cases. In part six, enhancements to human nature by various means are analyzed.”–Publisher’s description.
Principia Ethica is recognized as the definitive starting point for twentieth-century ethical theory. The text is reprinted here with the previously unpublished preface Moore wrote for a planned, but never completed, second edition. Though unfinished, it sets out clearly Moore’s second thoughts about his own work. The volume also includes two important pieces from his later ethical writings, “Free Will” and “The Conception of Intrinsic Value,” and a new introduction by Thomas Baldwin.
