Justice and Judgement is a comprehensive introduction to theories of judgement in contemporary political and moral philosophy. The book offers a critical examination of judgement in the recent works of Rawls, Habermas, Ackerman, Michelman and Dworkin, including an historical overview of the judgement model in contemporary political philosophy; the function of the constitution; and deliberative democracy. The book concludes with a discussion of universalism and contemporary liberalism and the judgement view of justice.
Hamlet tells Horatio that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in his philosophy. InDouble Vision, philosopher and literary critic Tzachi Zamir argues that there are more things in Hamlet than are dreamt of–or at least conceded–by most philosophers. Making an original and persuasive case for the philosophical value of literature, Zamir suggests that certain important philosophical insights can be gained only through literature. But such insights cannot be reached if literature is deployed merely as an aesthetic sugaring of a conceptual pill. Philosophical knowledge is not opposed to, but is consonant with, the literariness of literature. By focusing on the experience of reading literature as literature and not philosophy, Zamir sets a theoretical framework for a philosophically oriented literary criticism that will appeal both to philosophers and literary critics. Double Visionis concerned with the philosophical understanding induced by the aesthetic experience of literature. Literary works can function as credible philosophical arguments–not ones in which claims are conclusively demonstrated, but in which claims are made plausible. Such claims, Zamir argues, are embedded within an experiential structure that is itself a crucial dimension of knowing. Developing an account of literature’s relation to knowledge, morality, and rhetoric, and advancing philosophical-literary readings ofRichard III, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, andKing Lear, Zamir shows how his approach can open up familiar texts in surprising and rewarding ways.
Jeremy Carrette argues that the psychology of religion is no longer sustainable without a social critique, and that as William James predicted, the project of the modernist psychology of religion has failed. Controversially he champions greater social and philosophical analysis within the field to challenge the political naivety and disciplinary illusions of the traditional approaches to psychology of religion. Carrette discusses the relevance of the social and economic factors surrounding the debates of psychology and religion, through three critical examples: psychoanalysis humanistic psychology cognitive neuroscience. A Critical Psychology of Religion provides a new dimension to the debates surrounding religious experience. It will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of critical psychology, religious experience and the psychology of religion and extends aninterdisciplinary challenge to the separation of psychology, sociology, politics, economics and religion.
Most contemporary scholarly visions of moral identity in higher education suggest moral education in the university should deal primarily with a person’s professional or political identity instead of the overall ordering and enriching of a person’s various identities and the moral commitments that stem from them. In contrast, Glanzer and Ream argue that a more human moral education takes place within a university committed to a moral tradition that can set forth a comprehensive moral ideal for the university and its students about human well-being.
