Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism articulated the animating spirit of the Industrial Age, known ever since as the Protestant work ethic. Now, Pekka Himanen articulates a new, opposing cultural logic, born of the Information Age and rapidly gaining force. The Internet, e-mail, the first personal computers — all were created by hackers. As more of our work becomes hacker work, hacker values — faith in the power of free and open information, rejection of rigid time divisions, and propagation of a new social model organized around the spirit of play and the economy of free exchange — bleed out into the world and change consciousness in radical ways, as this epochal book so brilliantly explains.
It is widely acknowledged that this is the age of moral panics. From the Bulger case to mad cow disease, newspaper headlines continually warn of some new danger and television programmes echo the theme with sensational docmenturies. This concise survey will help student trace the development of ideas of moral panic and to analyse how changing public perceptions are shaped and reflected through the media over time. Using examples drawn from:* club culture and raves* mugging* sex and AIDS* children, violence and the family.
Adam Smith (1723-90) is celebrated all over the world as the author ofThe Wealth of Nationsand the founder of modern economics. A few of his ideas–that of the “invisible hand” of the market and that “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest” have become iconic. Yet Smith saw himself primarily as a philosopher rather than an economist and would never have predicted that the ideas for which he is now best known were his most important. This book shows the extent to whichThe Wealth of Nationsand Smith’s other great work,The Theory of Moral Sentiments, were part of a larger scheme to establish a grand “Science of Man,” one of the most ambitious projects of the European Enlightenment, which was to encompass law, history, and aesthetics as well as economics and ethics, and which was only half complete on Smith’s death in 1790. Nick Phillipson reconstructs Smith’s intellectual ancestry and shows what Smith took from, and what he gave to, in the rapidly changing intellectual and commercial cultures of Glasgow and Edinburgh as they entered the great years of the Scottish Enlightenment. Above all he explains how far Smith’s ideas developed in dialogue with those of his closest friend, the other titan of the age, David Hume.
“Morality and religion have failed because they are based on duplicity and fantasy. We need something new….” With this startling statement, Richard Garner begins to define a system of behavior that will nurture our capabilities for love and language, for creation and cooperation. The satisfying personal and social strategy for living Garner proposes is “informed, compassionate amoralism.” To do without morality, he argues, is to reject the idea that there are intrinsic values, objective duties, and natural rights. Leaving illusions behind us and learning to listen to others and to ourselves may be what we need to lead us out of the darkness.Garner builds his case on a survey of moral definitions and arguments from ancient Greece forward. Beyond Morality revisits the tenets of Christianity and Eastern religious, providing readers with a meaningful overview of the history of moral thought.Quotations illuminate and illustrate the text, adding to the value of Beyond Morality as a textbook for ethics courses. Author note: Richard Garner is Professor of Philosophy at The Ohio State University.
