Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is arguably the most influential of the Enlightenment Philosophers. In this outstanding introduction, Paul Guyer introduces and assesses all the major aspects of Kant’s thought. Beginning with a helpful overview of Kant’s life and times, Guyer introduces the “Copernican revolution” Kant brought about in metaphysics and epistemology, carefully introducing his arguments about the nature of experience, space and time in his most influential but difficult work,The Critique of Pure Reason. He gives a much-needed explanation of Kant’s famous theory of transcendental idealism, a cornerstone of his philosophy as a whole. He then examines Kant’s moral philosophy, clearly explaining Kant’s celebrated “categorical imperative” and his theories of duty, freedom of the will, and rights. Finally, he covers Kant’s aesthetics, in particular his arguments about the nature of beauty and the sublime and their relation to human freedom and happiness. A concluding chapterconsiders Kant’s legacy and his influence on the shape of contemporary philosophy. Kant is an ideal starting point for anyone coming to the philosopher for the first time, as well as those studying Kant in related disciplines.
“This compact book is intended as a practical guide for students involved in research, and it fulfils that goal well. …The chapter on ‘The funding and sponsorship of research’ is an excellent example of the author’s willingness and ability to include relevant, sensitive and practical content that is often left out of texts on ethics. …This is an easy book to read, it is concise and keeps to relevant content. …It would make an excellent text for a course in research ethics and/or research methods, and it will also provide an excellent planning and self-review guide for a practising researcher.” Higher Education Review”The book is aimed primarily at higher education students in education and the social sciences who are conducting a (typically small scale) research project. That is not to say that the publication is of little value to the supervisors of such projects or to experienced researchers as a resource. …the successful integration of a wide range of theoretical perspectives on ethics in the text is… one of the main accomplishments of this publication” RTI Resource CentreThis essential guide examines the ethical issues and questions which occur in university and professional research. The book helps both beginning and experienced researchers to identify ethical issues when they are conducting research, and attempt to resolve those issues.* Examines ethical issues which arise throughout research, from the design stage through to data collection and analysis * Investigates topical issues including consent, confidentiality, ethical questions in the dissemination of research* Discusses ethical theories and how these may be applied towards resolving ethical problems* Provides examples of ethical dilemmas and case studies throughout the textInsightful, wide-ranging and accessible, this guide is an invaluable tool for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and professionals who research as part of their jobs.
“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa has put the spotlight on all of us…In its hearings Desmond Tutu has conveyed our common pain and sorrow, our hope and confidence in the future.” –Nelson Mandela The establishment of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a pioneering international event. Never had any country sought to move forward from despotism to democracy both by exposing the atrocities committed in the past and achieving reconciliation with its former oppressors. At the center of this unprecedented attempt at healing a nation has been Archbishop Desmond Tutu, whom President Nelson Mandela named as Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With the final report of the Commission just published, Archbishop Tutu offers his reflections on the profound wisdom he has gained by helping usher South Africa through this painful experience. InNo Future Without Forgiveness, Tutu argues that true reconciliation cannot be achieved by denying the past. But nor is it easy to reconcile when a nation “looks the beast in the eye.” Rather than repeat platitudes about forgiveness, he presents a bold spirituality that recognizes the horrors people can inflict upon one another, and yet retains a sense of idealism about reconciliation. With a clarity of pitch born out of decades of experience, Tutu shows readers how to move forward with honesty and compassion to build a newer and more humane world.
