Russell Hardin presents a new explication of David Hume’s moral and political theory. With Hume, he holds that our normative views can be scientifically explained but they cannot be justified as true. Hume argued for the psychological basis of such views. In particular, he argued for sympathy as the mirroring of the psychological sensations and emotions of others. By placing Hume in the developing tradition of social science, as a strong forerunner of his younger friend Adam Smith, Hardin demonstrates Hume’s strong strategic sense, his nascent utilitarianism, his powerful theory of convention as a main source of social and political order, and his recognition of moral and political theory as a single enterprise.”Worthy of hearty recommendation.”–Lee Hardy, The Review of MetaphysicsRussell Hardin is Professor of Politics at New York University.Preface1. Nietzsche was surprisingly neglected by most English-language moral philosophers until recently. This volume capitalizes on a growth of interest in Nietzsche’s work on morality from two sides — from scholars of the history of philosophy and from contributors to current debates on ethical theory. In eleven new essays, leading philosophers aim both to advance philosophical understanding of Nietzsche’s ethical views — his normative and meta-ethics, his moral psychology, his views on free will and the nature of the self — and to make Nietzsche a live participant in contemporary debates in ethics and cognate fields.
Alasdair MacIntyre argues that Freud’s conception of the unconscious is complicated by his tendency to use the term in two different ways. MacIntyre shows how Freud uses the term “unconscious” both as a straightforward description of psychological phenomena, and as an evaluative notion to explain the links between childhood events and adult behavior. This clarification helps to shed light on the many misunderstandings of psychoanalysis, and to separate out what is and what is not of lasting value in Freud’s account of the unconscious. This new edition includes a substantial new preface by the author, in which he discusses repression, determinism, transference, and “practical rationality,” and offers a rare comparison of Aristotle and Lacan on the concept of desire. MacIntyre takes the opportunity to reflect both on the reviews and criticisms of the first edition and also on his own philosophical stance.
