This fresh analysis of the “state of the question” in religious ethics charts the course for future study and exploration in the field. Written in honor of James Gustafson, who provides a conclusion, these 22 original and tightly argued essays examine hotly debated controversies on a wide range of topics, from sources of theological ethics to the moral life. At the core of these complementary perspectives is the ever-increasing tension between the particularity of religious and philosophical traditions and the universality of moral discourse. Designed for classroom use.
What does it mean to lead a moral life? In her first extended study of moral philosophy, Judith Butler offers aprovocative outline for a new ethical practice–one responsive to the need for critical autonomy and grounded in a new sense of the human subject. Butler takes as her starting point one’s ability to answer the questions ocirc; What have I done?ouml; and ocirc; What ought I to do?ouml; She shows that these question can be answered only by asking a prior question, ocirc;Who is this aelig;I’ who is under an obligation to give an account of itself and to act in certain ways?ouml; Because I find that I cannot give an account of myself without accounting for the social conditions under which I emerge, ethical reflection requires a turn to social theory. In three powerfully crafted and lucidly written chapters, Butler demonstrates how difficult it is to give an account of oneself, and how this lack of self-transparency and narratibility is crucial to an ethical understanding of the human. In brilliant dialogue with Adorno, Levinas, Foucault, and other thinkers, she eloquently argues the limits, possibilities, and dangers of contemporary ethical thought. Butler offers a critique of the moral self, arguing that the transparent, rational, and continuous ethical subject is an impossible construct that seeks to deny the specificity of what it is to be human. We can know ourselves only incompletely, and only in relation to a broader social world that has always preceded us and already shaped us in ways we cannot grasp. If inevitably we are partially opaque to ourselves, how can giving an account of ourselves define the ethical act? And doesn’t an ethical system that holds us impossibly accountable for full self-knowledge and self-consistency inflict a kind of psychic violence, leading to a culture of self-beratement and cruelty? How does the turn to social theory offer us a chance to understand the specifically social character of our own unknowingness about ourselves? In this invaluable book, by recasting ethics as a project in which being ethical means becoming critical of norms under which we are asked to act, but which we can never fully choose, Butler illuminates what it means for us as ocirc;fallible creaturesouml; to create and share an ethics of vulnerability, humility, and ethical responsiveness.
In this classic text, Kant sets out to articulate and defend the Categorical Imperative – the fundamental principle that underlies moral reasoning – and to lay the foundation for a comprehensive account of justice and human virtues. This new edition and translation of Kant’s work is designed especially for students. An extensive and comprehensive introduction explains the central concepts of Groundwork and looks at Kant’s main lines of argument. Detailed notes aim to clarify Kant’s thoughts and to correct some commonmisunderstandings of his doctrines.
Confronted daily with decisions on how to present their stories, what to write and what not to write, journalists and the media are frequently accused of sensationalizing, of choosing only to report the bad news, and of misquoting those they interview. In Morals and the Media, Nick Russell addresses many of the concerns the public has about the media. He focuses on the fundamental moral questions and ethical dilemmas faced by journalists and discusses how the media both reflect and influence society. Displaying a broad understanding of the issues, he examines how values have been developed and applied, suggesting value systems which can be used to judge special situations. The book covers all the major print and electronic media and addresses a wide range of ethical issues with candour and insight gained from the author’s long career as a practising journalist. He points out how Canadian media ethics differ from those in the United States and includes many examples drawn from his impressive knowledge of the Canadian journalistic scene. The ‘Tough Calls’ at the end of each chapter invite readers to test their own ethics in scenarios drawn from real news stories. Morals and the Media is the first book to tackle journalistic decision-making in Canada. It will be essential reading in journalism courses but also an important resource for journalists, as it offers criteria for analyzing complex situations and reaching justifiable decisions. It will also be of interest to the consumers of journalism – the readers, listeners, and watchers who wonder why the media do what they do.
